My Story

Iona

I am a second generation Third Culture Kid (TCK). Born in Scotland, raised in Angola, I now live in Cambridge, UK with my husband and daughter. I have two passports, and I have repatriated to each nation. Repatriating caused a lot of turmoil, within me and around me. I struggled to cling onto my identity and, at times, my Christian faith, as I tried to integrate into foreign cultures that were meant to be “home.”

Writing became a way for me to process the nuances of the Third Culture Life. At first my blog was private, an online journal with carefully edited entries. And then, a friend read one piece and asked me to share it. She gave value to my words and helped me see how God could use my story and His work in my life to encourage others. Since then, I’ve had the personal conviction that God, as a relational God, can move us, as relational Christians, to growth, to repentance, to hope, to joy through personal testimony and stories. That conviction gives me the courage to continue sharing the joys and the trials and the lessons of my Adult TCK life.

Over the past few years, I have focused on sharing more information about TCKs and resources to encourage them. I have suspected, and believe it to be true, that stories are still the most powerful form of encouragement. It means a great deal to read someone else’s story, to see their reactions and their emotions and think “I’ve felt that too.” Stories, personal and abstract, are essential for us to learn how to live well and how to care for another with intention, as we wait for our Eternal Home.

Along with writing, I offer more practical help to TCKs and their communities through various resources and Family Debriefs. Here you can find curated resource pages for Third Culture Kids, TCK parents, supporting churches. You can also find my certifications and the services I provide for global families. I’m excited to expand this site and hopefully encourage and support each visitor.

But all changes aside, I will always prioritise personal stories – the good ones, the hard ones, and all the others in between.
